Seascapes 5 Week Workshop
RESCHEDULED DUE TO CORONAVIRUS - NOW RUNNING SEPTEMBER 2020 - 6.30pm to sunset every Thursday - Commences September 3rd 2020
Create a portfolio of images with a 5 week SEASCAPES Workshop this Spring on the glorious North Yorkshire Coast, culminating in a critique session at week 5.
Taking in locations on the North Yorkshire Coastline, we'll be spending time working on a Seascapes photography project based around this area. Each week, a different location will provide us with photographic interest and an opportunity to shoot new compositions and to hone our skills. Four out of the five weeks will be spent shooting on location, while in week 5 we will host a critique night in Yarm where we can assess your work.
Our journey will take in classic locations such as Saltwick Bay, Robin Hoods Bay, Whitby and Staithes with the aim of documenting this excellent stretch of jurassic coastline during the Spring/Summer period. This is a great time of the year to be shooting this area, as the sun position gives the opportunity to shoot sunset light on the east coast. Over the course of 5 weeks, the ultimate aim is produce a body of work that encapsulates the seascapes that are associated with this fabulous stretch of the North Yorkshire Coast.
We had a wonderful time last year and I'm hoping for more of the same in 2020. This workshop is really popular and has sold out quickly in the past two years. Early booking is advised.

The weeks running schedule will be dictated by the tides around that time of year. Full info will be given one week before the workshop.
Meeting points will be given upon booking and car sharing is possible. Pickup and drop off in Yarm High Street(or in close proximity), these are available on a first come first served basis. You are very welcome to drive your own vehicle and meet on location. - UPDATE Due to coronavirus, limited space will be available in my car and masks must be worn during the journey.
I will be available to help, guide and assist throughout the sessions, offering advice on composition, technique, filtering, camera settings and equipment. My local knowledge will lead us to great viewpoints for photographs. A good level of walking fitness is advised to ensure your enjoyment and the enjoyment of others. While the exertion level will not be strenuous, we will be working in coastal locations and as such the terrain may be rocky in certain areas.
As we are working outdoors, we will be able to maintain social distancing with our fairly small group of attendees. No further bookings will be taken for this workshop in order to limited numbers.
Suitable for intermediate to experienced photographers with at least a basic knowledge of semi-auto and manual settings.
My advice would be to attach your most useful lens to your camera body before we arrive on the beach. This will likely be a wide angle lens, somewhere between 10-24mm (APS-C sensor cameras) and 16-35mm (full frame). Further lenses can be added to your kit bag and can be changed in a sand free environment (i.e the car).
Tripod - A sturdy tripod is highly advised. A tripod will be essential at sunset and for creating movement in slow shutter speed images. Ensure that the tripod has sufficient strength to carry your camera with it's heaviest lens plus filters attached. Be aware that the wind on the coast can be much stronger than inland wind speeds. With this in mind, a solid tripod and a cautious approach is required.
Filters – ND Filters, ND Grads & Polarising Filter - Please be advised, filters will generally be required for sunrise/sunset shots plus any creative long exposures.
I have just returned from a trip to the Arctic Circle arranged by Michael. The best I can say is that this was a trip of a life time! The tour was friendly with lots of laughs. Michael, Scott & Joe passed on their knowledge freely. Nobody was left out, there was something for everyone to do and along with the photo opportunities we had great fun on snowmobiles at midnight on a frozen river going from Finland to Sweden, a dog sled ride through a frozen forest , reindeer sled ride and so much more.
Would I recommend Michael Cartwright Photography?? Hell yes!! A trip I will never forget & many new friends made.
Over the last 18 months I have been on a number of courses, workshops and photography holidays with Michael Cartwright and his team Scott Bonner and Joe Fletcher. Over that time my photography skills have really improved with their generous and friendly help and support. I have learned so much and met some great people along the way. The latest holiday in Arctic Finland / Sweden has been the icing on the cake. Well organised from start to finish with a range of activities and challenges. It was the most wonderful experience and I have some photographs that I really like. Huge thank you to the team and I can wholly recommend Michael Cartwright Photography!
Michael has a unique ability to take complicated subject matter and deliver it in a simple, passionate and infectious manner. He has taken me on a journey with his workshops from ‘extreme novice’ that was absolutely clueless to a confident enthusiast. I will be eternally grateful for all of Michael’s efforts in going the extra mile throughout my learning journey. He is a credit to his profession and he sets the standards for the rest of his industry to follow. Oh, and he is a thoroughly likeable chap too!
Great weekend away and I’m really pleased with my photographs! Thanks for a fantastic workshop, everything was first class, including the hotel, the food and the weather! I really enjoyed learning about different ways to compose my photos for a more professional feel. The workshop was well planned and was extremely informative and interesting. The fact that Michael kept a close eye on everybody's progress was an extra bonus. Thanks Michael
Both myself and my husband have been friends of Michael's for many years now during which time we have been on numerous photography trips with him!
We have thoroughly enjoyed every single trip from the Lake District, Paris, Budapest but my absolute favourite was the trip to Finland, we may not have been lucky enough to see the Northern Lights but what a fantastic adventure it turned out to be!! Each trip has been made extra special with the fabulous group of people that we have had the pleasure of making friends with, aside from that there is of course the excellent opportunity to take some amazing photographs of simply stunning scenery and architecture. The trips are always well organised and thoroughly thought through from beginning to end, as well as coming away with some truly amazing photos you will for sure meet some lovely people and make fantastic memories......
I attended my first camera course as a complete beginner, I didn’t even know how to turn the camera on! The initial course was perfect for me, very well explained throughout and left me wanting to know more. Michael and the team are brilliant teachers, they are all very patient and we have a lot of laughs along the way. Since learning how to use my camera I have progressed on to landscape workshops and now class myself as being very confident with my kit. I’ve joined Michael on many occassions and would definitely recommend these workshops!
